Rectal Ointment Application walkthrough.
Compounded rectal ointments treat hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and post-surgical recovery. Some are external-only; others use an applicator for internal placement. This guide covers both.
Step by step.
- 01
Wash hands and read the label
Confirm whether the prescription is for external use, internal use with applicator, or both. Wash hands thoroughly.

Position comfortably
Stand with one foot raised, lie on your side with knees drawn up, or kneel — whichever is most comfortable for the area being treated.

Apply externally
Squeeze a pea-sized amount onto a clean fingertip and apply to the affected area. Spread thinly.

Apply internally (if prescribed)
Attach the applicator tip to the tube. Lubricate the tip slightly, insert gently, and squeeze the tube while withdrawing slowly. Discard the applicator (or clean it per the label) after use.

Wash hands
Wash hands again with soap and water. Note timing in case more than one daily application is prescribed.
Notes
- Stop and call your prescriber if you experience increased pain or bleeding.
- Don't share applicators between people — even within a household.
