Intramuscular Self-Injection Guide walkthrough.
Intramuscular (IM) injections place medication deep into muscle tissue. Most TRT, B12, and some HCG protocols use this route. Common sites are the deltoid, ventrogluteal, and vastus lateralis. With clean technique it's straightforward.
Step by step.
- 01
Hand wash and prep supplies
Soap and water, alcohol swabs, syringe with appropriate needle (typically 22-25g, 1-1.5 inches), the vial, and a sharps container.
- 02
Draw the dose
Wipe the vial stopper with alcohol. Draw air equal to your dose, inject, then withdraw the prescribed dose. Tap out bubbles and confirm the volume.
- 03
Pick and clean a site
Deltoid (upper outer arm) for smaller volumes; ventrogluteal (upper outer hip) or vastus lateralis (mid-outer thigh) for larger volumes. Clean a 2-inch circle with alcohol and air-dry.
- 04
Inject
Stretch the skin taut over the chosen muscle. Hold the syringe like a dart and insert at 90° in one smooth motion. Aspirate briefly (pull plunger back) to confirm no blood return; if clear, inject slowly. Withdraw and apply gentle pressure.
- 05
Dispose and document
Drop the syringe in a sharps container. Apply pressure with a cotton ball or bandage. Log the dose, site, and date in your tracker.
Notes
- Warming oil-based testosterone in a clean cup of warm water makes it easier to draw and inject.
- Persistent soreness or swelling should be reported to your prescriber.
