Testosterone HRT in Women — What to Expect walkthrough.
Low-dose testosterone therapy in women is used to address symptoms such as low libido, fatigue, brain fog, and reduced muscle mass that may occur with hormonal imbalance. Compounded formulations allow your provider to fine-tune your dose precisely. This guide covers cream and gel application and what to expect.
Step by step.
- 01
Choose your site
Apply to clean, dry skin on the inner forearm, inner upper arm, inner thigh, or as directed by your provider. Rotate sites to prevent skin irritation.
- 02
Apply the correct amount
Use the prescribed number of clicks (Topi-Click) or the marked amount on your syringe applicator. Rub in completely until no visible residue remains.
- 03
Wash your hands
Wash hands immediately after application to prevent transferring testosterone to partners, children, or pets through skin contact.
- 04
Wait before contact
Allow at least 2-4 hours before skin-to-skin contact at the application site. Cover with clothing after application as an added precaution.
- 05
Know the timeline
Most women notice energy and mood changes within 3-6 weeks. Libido improvements may take 6-12 weeks. Full benefit is typically assessed at 3 months with repeat labs.
- 06
Watch for side effects
At physiologic doses, side effects are uncommon. Monitor for acne, increased body hair, or voice changes and report these to your provider promptly — they may indicate the dose needs adjustment.
Notes
- Never share your medication. Testosterone is a controlled substance — your prescription is specific to your labs and symptoms. Do not adjust the dose without provider guidance.
- Individual response to hormone therapy varies. Follow your prescriber's specific instructions and keep your recommended follow-up appointments and lab monitoring.
